Here’s what you need to know:

  • With cases up in 41 states, local officials scramble to contain the outbreak.
  • After attacks by Trump aides, Fauci says focus should be on the virus rather than ‘games people are playing.’
  • Houston becomes the latest large school district to go online in the fall.

Coronavirus Live Updates: Death Tolls Rise in Some U.S. States, Signaling a Possible End to the National Decline

The country recorded its sixth single-day record in 10 days with almost 60,000 cases on Thursday. In South Africa, virus rules are forcing some to choose between breaking tradition and breaking the law.

  • Other early hot spots curbed their outbreaks. But the United States is seeing record numbers of new cases.
  • A war of words between Trump and Fauci is playing out through interviews with the news media.
  • The Los Angeles teachers union calls to keep campuses closed in the fall.
  • Facing a third wave of virus cases, Hong Kong shuts its schools.
  • Cases in the U.S. military have more than doubled in one month.

Coronavirus Live Updates: A Muted, Even ‘Surreal’ U.S. Holiday Weekend

Assessing the pandemic’s real death rate could offer clues on what to expect next. And thousands of residents of public housing towers in Melbourne, Australia, are subjected to a five-day lockdown.

RIGHT NOW

Mayor Kate Gallego of Phoenix says she asked FEMA to send in teams to do community-based tests, but was told “they’re moving away from that — which feels like they’re declaring victory while we’re in crisis mode.”

Here’s what you need to know:

  • In Texas, caseloads soar as hospital beds dwindle and political divisions sharpen.
  • Health experts push back on Trump’s false claim that 99 percent of U.S. infections are ‘totally harmless.’
  • The pandemic has dulled some July 4 weekend celebrations — but not all.
  • How deadly is the coronavirus? Scientists are searching for a definitive answer.
  • In Australia, thousands are told they can’t leave their homes, effective immediately.
  • Voters endorse Tokyo governor’s handling of the pandemic by re-electing her.
  • A large-scale study in Britain will look at lasting effects on those who survive Covid-19.

Coronavirus Live Updates: U.S. Reaches 50,000 Daily Cases for the First Time

As domestic abuse reports rose during lockdowns, Britain left victims in peril. Are N.Y.C. children going back to school this fall? Yes, says the mayor. We’ll see, says the governor.

RIGHT NOW

The U.S. has now set single-day case records on six of the last nine days.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The U.S. hits another record, surpassing 50,000 new cases in a single day.
  • The governor of Texas orders most residents to wear masks in public.
  • Locked down with their abusers, women in the U.K. can expect little help from the government.
  • Young patients are vulnerable, too, a W.H.O. official says. And colleges are wary about communal living spaces.
  • Congress eyes more spending as the virus surges and the economy falters.
  • Only a dozen states have managed to keep new case levels flat or declining.
  • The mayor and the governor sow confusion about reopening New York City’s schools.

U.S. Outbreak Spiraling Out of Control

Coronavirus Live Updates: 30 Days of New Cases Show the U.S. Outbreak Spiraling Out of Control

The United States set a single-day case record for the fifth time in a little over a week. Heading into the Fourth of July holiday, officials warn residents to stay home.

RIGHT NOW

Florida reported more than 10,100 new coronavirus cases, a record for new cases reported on a single day.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • If June was the month the pandemic spiraled out of control in the U.S., July may show how bad it can get.
  • The U.S. economy added nearly 5 million jobs in June.
  • Congress is eyeing more spending as the virus surges and the economy struggles.
  • Will Europe’s economy recover faster than America’s? The debate is on.
  • Days after a wedding in India, the groom died and at least 100 guests tested positive for the virus.
  • Researchers find new evidence that a mutation helped the virus spread, but questions linger.
  • Tokyo’s nightlife districts see a surge in new cases.

Most experts believe a vaccine won’t be ready until next year. It’s time to reset our expectations

The virus is winning. That much is certain more than six months into a shape-shifting pandemic that’s killed 450,000 people worldwide, is gaining ground globally and has disrupted lives from Wuhan to Sao Paulo.

While promising, fast-moving vaccine projects are underway in China, Europe and the U.S., only the most optimistic expect an effective shot to be ready for global distribution this year.

As the pandemic rolls into the summer, this much is clear. The virus will not “fade away” even without a vaccine, as Trump predicted this week.

“This was never something that would be containable or would disappear,” said Adalja at Johns Hopkins. “It spreads too efficiently between humans. That’s all it needs to do.”

Chinese agency world’s biggest funder of coronavirus research, Oxford study finds

  • National Natural Science Foundation of China has given financial support to 124 studies published in top journals, researchers say
  • That was more than the US Department of Health and National Institutes of Health combined
  •  Seven of the 10 most prolific institutes that also owned the research were from China. The Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Wuhan University, both in Wuhan, were at the top of the list. Harvard Medical School, the only American institute in the top 10, ranked third. Other Chinese institutes included the University of Hong Kong, Zhejiang University, Chinese University of Hong Kong and Fudan University.

China confirms unauthorised labs were told to destroy early coronavirus samples

  • National health authority says this was done for biosafety reasons and to ‘prevent secondary disasters caused by unidentified pathogens’
  • US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said Beijing declined to provide samples and destroyed them at the start of the outbreak

Zhuang Pinghui in Beijing

Published: 8:04pm, 15 May, 2020

Chinese magazine Caixin reported in February that some hospitals had sent samples to private gene sequencing companies to identify the mystery virus early in the outbreak. Some of those results came back as early as December 27 and were identified as being from the same coronavirus family as Sars, the report said. One company had been told to destroy all virus samples, according to the report.

The National Health Commission started investigating the virus on December 31 and informed the World Health Organisation of the outbreak the same day. On January 3, it ruled out that the virus was a known pathogen causing respiratory disease, and on January 9, it said the illness was caused by a novel coronavirus. It was later named Sars-CoV-2, and the disease it causes Covid-19.
