The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) confirmed the country’s first case of monkeypox on June 21, 2022, as the viral disease continues to spread across the world. The agency pledged to strengthen its monitoring and response systems, raising the alert level to “caution” for the infectious disease. The Korean national, who returned from Germany on June 21, has been undergoing treatment at Incheon Medical Centre. A day earlier, a 42-year-old British flight attendant in Singapore also tested positive, making him the city state’s first case of monkeypox in three years. Singapore’s Ministry of Health said the patient is in stable condition in a ward at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases and all of his close contacts have been put in quarantine.

China is the world's last major economy that's still committed to the so-called zero-COVID strategy, stamping out any new cases with harsh measures such as lockdowns, mass testing and lengthy quarantines. As the extremely contagious Omicron variant sweeps across the world, experts have been questioning about the heavy price of this strategy. But China still shows no sign of giving it up. On the contrary, it just declared an initial victory in its latest COVID battle in the capital city of Beijing.

The urgency of the COVID-19 pandemic spurred a worldwide response. From government to business, the arts to science. Big and small innovations are not only encouraged but critical for the survival of many. But some efforts have become more successful than others. Just a few months ago the municipal government in Mexico City was still distributing ivermectin in recovery kits to residents who tested postitive for COVID-19 despite no evidence that the drug is effective against the virus. But tremendous breakthroughs have occurred in the scientific community, advancements in mRNA technology could be critical for cancer treatments of the future. And as Monkey Pox cases spread around the world, what lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic will apply and which won't?

A new Covid-19 outbreak in Beijing has interrupted the Chinese capital’s tentative reopening after a recent wave of cases. The Chinese capital was put under partial lockdown in late April 2022 after infection numbers started to rise. The more recent outbreak was described as “ferocious” by a local official, who said it was traced to the Heaven Supermarket, a bar in Sanlitun, a popular entertainment district in central Beijing. As of June 13, 2022, some 228 Covid-19 cases reported across Beijing had been linked to the Heaven Supermarket bar. Entertainment venues in Beijing had just been allowed to reopen as Covid restrictions had been eased days earlier.

In the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, mRNA vaccines are a beacon of hope. Some say these vaccines could open up completely new treatment methods. But is mRNA technology really a game-changer in medicine - or is it just hype? For many years, mRNA technology was deemed unsuitable as a therapeutic approach. But today, over 150 different mRNA-based therapies and vaccines are currently being developed around the world. In the future, mRNA is expected to be used to treat a wide range of diseases - including cancer, HIV, malaria, cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases. But how does it work exactly? This documentary shows how mRNA vaccines transport the blueprint of a viral protein into cells, which then begin to produce the foreign biomolecule. The immune system ramps up its defenses against the virus, even though it only encounters a small, harmless part of the pathogen. Scientists started investigating mRNA some three decades ago with the aim of developing individual therapies to treat cancer. Today, clinical studies are looking at how heart muscle regenerates immediately after a heart attack with an mRNA-based therapy. People with autoimmune diseases or HIV could also benefit from mRNA treatments and vaccines. Influenza viruses are constantly producing new strains. An mRNA vaccine could be adapted more quickly than conventional vaccines - and would therefore be more effective. But what is the real potential of mRNA technology? What are the risks? What have scientists learned from COVID-19? Is mRNA technology medicine's new magic bullet - or just hype?

The war in Ukraine is creating a disastrous crisis in the world’s food supplies that could last for years, according to the World Trade Organisation. Ukraine is a major global exporter of wheat, contributing 9% of the global market. It accounts for a massive 42% of the global sunflower oil market and 16% of the world's maize. However millions of tonnes of grain are sitting in warehouses and Ukrainian ports unable to be exported due to the war. African countries are being hit especially hard by wheat and fertilizer shortages, according to the WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
The shortage comes as inflation is squeezing household budgets, and hits low-wage workers especially hard.

China’s financial hub Shanghai is set to lift its unprecedented two-month lockdown tomorrow (June 1). Officials said the public will be allowed to move about freely anywhere in the city as long as they are in a low-risk area. A 72-hour negative COVID test result is needed to take public transport as well as enter public areas. Shanghai has also set up testing booths within a 15-minute walk from any location within the city.
